Bendziny is a Tŝilhqot’in name for this lake and refers to the wider locality around the lake. The name is a proper noun and has been in use for so long that a direct translation to English is difficult. Sometimes referred to as "Bendziny Biny" where "biny" means "lake" in the Tŝilhqot’in language (Advice from Tŝilhqot'in National Government, 2018).

The former official name "Puntzi" is an anglicization of Bendziny (Advice from Tŝilhqot'in National Government, 2018).
