Origin Notes and History:

The Uchucklesaht name for Cheeyah Island is Timka'a, meaning "gooseberry place" . An image of the written name shows the preferred orthography.

Cheeyah Island (as labelled on modern maps) is actually an adaption of Ci'yaa - the Uchucklesaht name for just the north shore of the island; the name can be approximately translated as "rocky area on the edge" and refers to the place where spring salmon was cut and dried.
