Cheeyah is actually an anglecization of the Uchucklesaht name for just the north shoreline of the island - Ci'yaa; the name can be approximately translated as "rocky area on the edge" and refers to the place where spring salmon was cut and dried. The Uchucklesaht name for the entire island is Timka'a, meaning "gooseberry place" (advice from Uchucklesaht Tribe, December 2010)
