Sandhill Creek adopted 6 November 1934 on Department of National Defense sheet 415d (Ottawa file OBF 1449-2). Name changed to Tetayut Creek 4 September 2008 on 92B/11, as proposed by Tsawout First Nation and Capital Regional District and endorsed by Central Saanich District Municipality and Saanich Peninsula Wastewater Commission (file V.1.38)

Tetayut (pronounced teTAY ut) is the name traditionally used by Tsawout First Nation, and means "the water that goes deep within" (proposal from Capital Regional District, file V.1.38). Identified as Te,táyet - meaning "little bay" - in Saltwater People as told by Dave Elliott Sr., published for School District 63 Native Education program, 2nd edition 1990, p.26.
