"Well-known local name, descriptive of the barren and treeless aspect of surroundings. First used by one of the older residents of the district, G.C.F. Dalziel, who established fuel caches there.... This is the largest lake, and the only one suitable for aircraft landings in a considerable area. There has been much prospecting & mineral staking in the district within the past year and the lake is in relatively frequent use." (30 April 1957 letter from Geological Survey of Canada, file T.2.54)
