Natal (Post Office & station) adopted 12 December 1939 on 82/SE, as labelled on BC map 4C, 1913, and BC map 1EM, 1915. Form of name changed to Natal (Village) 27 July 1964 on 82G/NE-NW. Form of name changed to Natal (Station) in the 1977 supplement to the Gazetteer; subsequently adjusted to Natal (railway point).

New Michel Post Office was opened 16 April 1909; name changed to Natal Post Office 1 January 1914, located on L.1, Block 16, L4589, Gp 1. Natal Village Municipality incorporated 22 December 1960; incorporation dissolved and amalgamated within Sparwood District Municipality 12 May 1966. Post Office name changed to Sparwood Post Office 25 May 1971, now relocated to Lot 49, Plan 7008.

Apparently named at the time of the Boer War (1899-1902), in honour of the British Crown Colony of Natal. Natal and the Cape Colony were engaged in hostilities with the Boer republics of Transvaal and Orange Free State.
