Nanimo Lakes adopted 7 April 1949 on 92F/1, as an established local name and as labelled on BC Lands' map 2A, 1919, 1920, 1938, etc.

Upper of the two Nanaimo Lakes is labelled "Barnston Lake" on British Admiralty Chart A1917, 1883, apparently taken from Dr. Robert Brown's map or journal of the Vancouver Island Exploration Expedition, 1865. "Nanaimo Lakes (not First Nanaimo Lake and Second Nanaimo Lake)" identified in the 1930 BC Gazetteer. The lakes have also been identified as "1st Nanaimo Lake" and "2nd Nanaimo Lake" in c1950-60s documents and reports. (author/title/dates not cited).
