Origin Notes and History:
Adopted 31 March 1924 on 104K/14 as listed in 1898 Gazetteer and all subsequent years and as labeled on Reference Map 1H "BC, Northern" (1917). May appear earlier on Yukon map and sketch maps.(OBF 0002). In lieu of original paperwork this name was reconfirmed 8 April 1954.

Derived from the Tlingit word "Na-ka-i-na. Where two rivers meet (Sloko and Nakina) there is a burial site, adjacent to a lake of still water. Moose still feed there. Na-ka-i-na means 'hill hilding lake back.'" (January 1990, information provided from Chief Sylvester Jack, Tlingit at Atlin).
