Named in 1924 by the Carpe-Chamberlin climbing party, in the mistaken belief that this pass was the true source of the North Thompson River, at the same time proposing that the nearby mountain and glacier be named Mount David Thompson and David Glacier (see Don Munday's explanation and sketch map in CAJ vol XV, 1925, pp.129-133). [the mountain was subsequently renamed Mount Sir John Thompson after Canada's 5th Prime Minister, John Sparrow David Thompson; the names David Pass and David Glacier, given in 1924, were retained.]
