"sɬχil̕əx slhx̱í7elsh" is comprised of the two place names for the rock, as shared with the Park Board by Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations’ language experts, the First Nations whose territories overlap with the feature and who have deep, lasting connections to the site. “sɬχil’əx” is the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ name and “slhx̱í7elsh”is the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Snichim name. Neither of these names are capitalized (information submitted by Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, 2024).

The current official name, "Siwash" is a Chinook Jargon word derived from the French word sauvage (savage in English), a derogatory term for Indigenous people (information submitted by Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, 2024).
