The name “Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ” is an unkillable worm - no matter how many times it is cut it replicates and grows back, so “Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ” means "unkillable" (information provided by Liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ Nations - We Wai Kai, Wei Wai Kum and Kwiakah, 2024).

At one time this passage was called "Yaculta Narrows," a reference to Liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ people who lived close by and who were known to take tolls in return for safe passage through the narrow corridor. This passage was controlled by the Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ people who continue today to pilot marine craft through this territory, including those traveling by canoe. Most recently the Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ pilots supported the Hawaiian catamaran sailing vessel, Hōkule'a, and the Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ canoe, ƛ̓əniqʷəla (information provided by Liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ Nations - We Wai Kai, Wei Wai Kum and Kwiakah, 2024).
