Origin Notes and History:

"First Island" adopted 7 June 1956 on 104N/12. Wéinaa X’áat’i made the official name 28 July 2023 on 104N/12, as requested by Taku River Tlingit First Nation. Wéinaa X’áat’i is the traditional and ancestral Tlingit name (advice from Taku River Tlingit, 2016).

Wéinaa X’áat’i is the Tlingit name for the island which translates to "alkali place island". The Tlingit name describes a natural feature of the area since there is alkali found in the soil in the area (advice from Taku River Tlingit, 2016).
