Named in 1864 by Captain Richards, RN, after William Moriarty, RN, (1832-1886) 1st lieutenant aboard HM surveying vessel Plumper. Moriarty entered the Royal Navy in 1846; lieutenant 1854; returned to England after serving on this coast 1857-61; commander 1866; captain, retired, 1881. Died in Ireland 1886.
