Adopted 29 December 1945 on C.3450, as labelled on c1907 British Admiralty Chart, not "White Spit" as labelled on earlier British Admiralty Chart.

Called "White Spit" in 1859 by Captain Richards, RN. Changed to Penelakut Spit in 1905, by Captain John F. Parry, HMS Egeria, after the Penelakut tribe, who had their original village near the spit. See Penelakut Island for more information.
