Named by Point Atkinson lighthouse keeper Walter Erwin and his wife Jane; while exploring the area soon after assuming the job in 1879, he and his wife found a particularly compelling grove of cypress trees along this creek.

Named by Walter Erwin, Point Atkinson lighthouse keeper 1879, and early landowner here (Crown Grant, DC 582, 6 August 1891); so-named because cypress logs put into the creek to float down to Burrard Inlet were badly broken up by the rocks.
