From the Russian words Krest, meaning "Cross" and Ova, meaning "city", so this probably means "City of the Cross" but it is not known why the name was chosen for this particular community. (October 1959 advice from Archivist). See also Doukhobor Genealogy Website: http://www.doukhobor.org/settlements.html (January 2008)

"When the Doukhobors, a Russian religious sect, settled here they named their community Krestova, meaning 'the place of the cross'."
