Within the traditional territory of the Toquaht First Nation, and the location of a important Toquaht heritage site. "Yakaacist means Long island - used for collecting mussels, gooseneck barnacles and for fishing for cod." (July 1983 interview by Denis St. Clair with Toquaht Elders Jimmy McKay, Sammy McKay and Chief Bert Mack.) "This island is round in shape, so the name may be interpreted as ' long in the water ' referring to the shelves extending from the island, used for harvesting shellfish." (advice from Anne Mack, shared November 2010)
