Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations Economic Development Corporation and Swiftwater Power Corporation/Barkley Project Group, are applicants for commercial water power development on this creek. The tenure application area is within the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations. No existing traditional name was apparent from their records and knowledge base, however the traditional Nuu-chah-nulth word Haa?ak?suuk was agreed upon, meaning "strong, powerful, healthy." In consideration of difficulties encountered by those that aren't familiar with the Nuu-chah-nulth language and orthography, and with limitations of symbols utilized in a digital environment, Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations has agreed that hyphens can be used to create the pauses required in the correct pronunication of the name, hence Haa-ak-suuk Creek.
