The water licence applicant, William F. (Duke) Peterson / Holmes Hydro Inc, suggested that the creek be named "Kelly Creek" after his granddaughter; rejected in favour of Goodell Creek, a name chosen to recall W.R. Goodell, an outfitter and guide who operated out of the Dunster-McBride area in the 1920s and 1930s.
