Origin Notes and History:
Both CPR and GNR maintained depots here, on the east and west sides of the Elk River, respectively. Morrissey Mines Post Office was opened 1 May 1903, located about 3 miles up Morrissey Creek on the GNR spur; renamed Tonkin Post Office 1 October 1903. At the same time, 1 October 1903, another Morrissey Mines Post Office was opened about 1 mile above the mouth of Morrissey Creek (on CPR track ?); closed 23 November 1905. Morrissey Mines (settlement and station on CPR) labelled on BC map 1EM, 1915 & 1930. Mine closed in 1948; station not listed in CPR timetables after 1948.
