Kincolith Creek adopted in the 1930 BC Gazetteer, as labelled on BC map 3M, 1916. Form of name changed to Kincolith River 6 August 1953 on 103P, as labelled on BC map 1H, 1917. Form of name changed to Ksi Gingolx per Nisga'a Treaty, Appendix F-3, effective 11 May 2000. See Gingolx (community) for name origin information.

In 1867, Rev. R. Doolan, along with a raft of Nisga'a converts, left the village of Abanseeks to establish a mission at Xmaat'in (Dogfish Bight). In a futile attempt to cross Saxwhl Xk'alaan (the mouth (?) of Portland Inlet, they beached at Ksi Gingolx and established here instead.

This river was labelled “Mission Creek” on BC map 1A, 1912. "Mission Creek" refers to the Kincolith Mission, established here in 1867. Rev. R. Doolan had intended to establish a mission at Dogfish Bight, but his party was unable to cross Portland Inlet, so beached here instead.
