Approximately 1000 acres (405 hectares). Previously known as Coal Peninsula because of the coal deposits. Designated by the Royal Engineers as a military reserve in 1860, because of its' strategic location protecting the colonial capital of New Westminster. Logged by various companies between the 1860s and mid-1880s, until the fledgling Vancouver City Council successfully petitioned the Dominion government to lease the reserve to the City for use as a park. Designated as a National Historic Site by Parks Canada in 1988. Lease most recently renewed in 2007.
