Origin Notes and History:

Coal Creek (Post Office) adopted 12 December 1939 on 82/SE, located east of Fernie as labelled on BC map 1EM, 1915. Omitted from 1953 BC Gazetteer. Identified as an abandoned coal mine in 1960 Culture Check. Form of name changed to Coal Creek (locality) 18 December 1962 on 82G/SE. Rescinded 19 June 1992 on 82G/7.

Coal Creek prospecting camp identified in Geological Survey of Canada Summary Report for 1891, including Mr. Fernie's description of 20 coal seams whose exploration he was supervising (excerpted in 1898 BC Mines Report, p.524). "....20 men now employed..." (1897 BC Mines Report, p.628). "Coal Creek" (camp) labelled adjacent to Elk River trail, about 3 miles south of Fernie, on BC Mines 1898 map "Southern Portion of East & West Kootenay Districts", and on BC Lands 1902 map "East & West Kootenay".

Coal Creek Post Office was opened 1 November 1903, located at the Crows Nest Coal Company's camp, on Coal Creek about 5 miles above Fernie, as labelled on BC map 1EM, 1915. Post Office closed 15 December 1945; re-opened 3 September 1946; closed 31 October 1946.
