Identified as The Big Cañon on "Sketch of Part of British Columbia" by Lieut. R.C. Mayne, RN, 1859. Identified as "Big Canon" on Trutch's 1871 map of British Columbia. Identified as Black Cañon on Geological Survey of Canada's "Map of a portion of the Southern Interior of British Columbia" by G.M. Dawson, 1877, located just above 16 Mile House and below Hell's Gate Rapid (sic).
