Origin Notes and History:

Port Simpson (village) adopted in the 18th Report of the Geographic Board of Canada, 31 March 1924, as labelled on BC map 3M, 1916; form of name changed to Port Simpson (Post Office & Steamer Landing) 3 April 1952, then to Port Simpson (Community) 28 February 1983. Name changed to Lax Kw'alaams (community) 4 April 1986 per Band Council Resolution.

Fort Simpson Trading Post established in the summer of 1831 and moved to the present location on the south side of Port Simpson in 1834. Named after Captain Emelius Simpson in the marine service of the Hudson's Bay Company, who had died that year at Fort Nass. "Lach Goo Alams" noted as the Indian name of the village established near the trading post. Fort Simpson Post Office was opened 1 October 1885. Changed to Port Simpson Post Office 1 March 1900.
