So-named in 1860 by Captain Richards, because this body of water separates islands named in 1792 by Captain Vancouver after Lord Chancellors of England - the 1st Earl of Hardwicke and Edward, Lord Thurlow, who served Parliament in that capacity in the 1740's and 1780's respectively.
