Douglas (settlement) labelled on Trutch's 1871 map of British Columbia & BC map 2B, 1914; "Douglas (abandoned mining settlement)" identified in the 1930 BC Gazetteer. Douglas (settlement) adopted 3 April 1950 on 92 G. Name changed to Port Douglas (community) 25 September 1980 on 92 G/16, as labelled on Gust. Epner's 1862 Map of the Gold Regions of BC.

Settlement at head of Little Harrison Lake, 1858-1870, and the starting point for the upper Fraser goldfields via Lillooet, Anderson and Seton Lakes (the first route to the Cariboo, 1858); named after James Douglas (1803-1877), governor of British Columbia. Douglas Post Office was opened 19 August 1859, W.H. Franklyn postmaster; post office was closed before April 1867.
