Lieutenant Ian Philip MacDonald Picnic Area
Origin Notes and History:
|
Lieutenant Ian Philip MacDonald Picnic Area adopted 9 September 1995, on 92 F/7, as dedicated by BC Parks and Royal Canadian Legion Bowser & District Branch #211. Also known as MacDonald Picnic Area, and cross-referenced thus in place names records.
Named to remember Lieutenant Ian Philip MacDonald, Canadian Scottish Regiment, of Fanny Bay, killed in action 10 June 1944. BC Casualty List p.65. See file B.1.44 for copies of 1946 correspondence to the Honourable E.T. Kenney, Minister of Lands and Forests from the Fanny Bay-Bowser Memorial Fund Committee re: local fundraising to establish MacDonald Park at Rosewall Creek. Presumably this plan to name "MacDonald Park" was overlooked or overturned, as the provincial park established on the site in 1956 was named Rosewall Creek Park. Photographs of 1995 interpretive plaque, dedicating the picnic area, on file B.1.44. A description of Lieutenant MacDonald's platoon and their role in the battle at Putot, France, on the night of his death appears in Ready for the Fray - The History of the Canadian Scottish Regiment, by R.H.Roy.
