Named to remember Canadian Merchant Navy Seaman-Gunner Douglas Richard Elworthy, the only Canadian to die when the troop-transport "Empress of Asia" was bombed by the Japanese off Singapore, 5 February 1942. Elworthy was born July 1918 at Cardiff, Wales; came to Vancouver at the age of 4 and enlisted at Vancouver; he is buried in Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore, grave 35, B, 12.
