Established by Order in Council 1055, 31 July 1991. Conversion of OIC to Statute designation per Bill 17-2000: Protected Areas of British Columbia Act, 29 June 2000; the whole containing 142 ha. more or less.

Land donated by MacMillan Bloedel; initial discussions had stipulated that the park be named for MB's retiring chairman Ray Smith, which stipulation was later retracted. Named in association with Dionisio Point, in turn named after the Spanish naval explorer, Commander Dionisio Alcala Galiano.
