This stream derives its name from the B.X. Ranch, east of Swan Lake, established c1868 by Francis Jones Barnard; pre-emption record issued 10 May 1873. The ranch in turn had been so-named because it served as a stock farm suppling horses for the B.X. (Barnard's Express) stage lines, operating on the Cariboo Road.
