Named by BC Forest Service after J.A. "Jim" Mahood, the first forest ranger to be stationed in the district in the early 1930s. Born 1885; started as assistant ranger with Forest Service, 1917, at Prince George; transferred to Vancouver district 1918; retired 31 August 1950.

The local names are "Gallagher Creek" or "Johnson Slough" according to c1980 information provided by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, in turn from their report #518 (date of report not cited). [Johnson Slough was formerly a secondary channel of the Fraser, on the west side of Wahleach Island, now cut off from the main channel.]
