Submitted by Karl Ricker in 1978 as recommended by Neal M. Carter, BC Mountaineering Club - a well-established name in mountaineering circles (file P.1.61). The arrangement of pinnacles and spires resembles a 19th century steam locomotive. The name, contrary to popular belief, does NOT refer to Phyllis Munday, but to Phyllis Beltz, an early BCMC member and pioneer of park mountaineering. Phylis' Engine [sic] described by Karl Ricker in UBC's Varsity Outdoor Club Journal, 1958, p.30.
