Name required for water licence; in the absence of any known local name, "Wiggs" proposed, after W.J. ( "Wiggs") O'Neill, who oversaw the clearing of the Smithers townsite in 1913. Born at Barkerville in 1882, O'Neill stayed on in the new townsite, eventually building a garage, theatre and electric lightplant. Died at Smithers in 1964, age 82.
