Origin Notes and History:

Brethour Island adopted 10 January 1935 on National Defense sheet 415e, Sidney, as recommended by Hydrographic Service; not "Hill Island" as labelled on early Admiralty Charts and on BC map 2A, 1913. Presumably a more distinctive name was sought.

Named by H.D. Parizeau, Hydrographic Service, after a pioneer family by the name of Brethour, who about 1873 were the original owners of the present townsite of Sidney.
