An amalgamation of the names Abbot, Fay and Thompson, members of the Appalachian Mountain Club of Boston who climbed this mountain in 1895 and named it after themselves that year. First ascent had already been credited to H.A. Perley, W.H. Rau and Miss Macleod in 1893; second ascent credited to Fay in 1894. (The Selkirk Range, A.O.Wheeler, 1905, p.373)
