Variously spelled Hocsall, Hockstall, Huckstall, Huxstall, Oxstall.... Ecstall is a Tsimshian word meaning "something from the side" in the context of a tributary - the Skeena being the main stream. The same word is used in conversation, as we would use the expression "a side issue" - it is a wide stream with very little current, but not navigable except for flatbottomed craft, and is reported to extend nearly to Douglas Channel."(c1924 notations on BC name card) Extent of mouth provided July 1971 by Hydrographic Service (file H.1.27)
