Adopted in 1862 by Captain Richards, RN, as named by Mr. William Duncan after the Reverend Henry Venn (1796-1873), honourary secretary of the Church Mission Society, 1841-73. Labelled "Venn Creek" on British Admiralty Chart 364, 1865 et seq - creek being an old word for inlet.
