Adoped 31 March 1924 on 103J/1 as an established name as labeled on Reference Map 3M "Prince Rupert" (1916, 1921). In lieu of original paperwork this name was reconfirmed 5 July 146. May have previously been labeled as Leloo or South Porpoise Island (maps/dates not cited).

"Lelu" recorded as being named after the Chinook jargon word for "wolf." Recorded as being named this because many wolves were present in the area at the time the name came in to use (potentially as early as 1905).
