The local name is "Railway Pass" [sic], so-named because of a survey of a railway route (8 January 1970 advice from Mr. J. Blackey, Location Branch, Department of Highways, Victoria, in turn as relayed from Highways District Office). Unlikely, however, that a railway survey was conducted through this particular pass - the PGER route through the summit of the mountains was long since established following the gold-rush trail.

Decision to adopt the form "Railroad" Pass in association with Railroad Creek, in turn so-labelled on pre-emtor's map 7, Lillooet, August 1913, and identified in 1913 notes to accompany survey for STL 9318P adjacent to the mouth of the creek (Field Book 2732/13 ph 22), and in 1913 notes to accompany surveys for Lots 3114 & 3115 surrounding the upper reaches of the creek (Field Book 2721/13 ph 22).
