Adopted 10 July 1923, as labelled on British Admiralty Chart 584 published in 1863 from 1861 surveys by Captain Richards, as labelled on BC map 2A, 1913 et seq, and as identified in the 1909 BC Gazetteer.

Named by Captain Richards, RN, after Staff Commander Edward Parker Bedwell, second master aboard HM surveying vessel Plumper, 1857-60. Master 1860, and appointed to HMS Hecate, 1861-62, which vessel relieved the Plumper of her surveying duties in December 1860. Staff commander, retired, 1870.
