Named by John Clarke, when climbing in the Pitt-Stave Rivers area 16-19 July 1971: "....[Pitt Lake] was the ancient home of the Katzie people of the Halkomelem group of Coast Salish [Indigenous People], and some new names applied to features in the icefields are derived from their language; Katzie (Kaytzee) means people of." (CAJ 1972 pp.111-112)
