Poole Inlet adopted 7 July 1955 on Ottawa File OBF 3986 as established on BC Map 2F, date not cited. Name changed 7 January 2022 to Gid G̱waa GyaaG̱a GawG̱a on 103B/6 as recommended by The Council of the Haida Nation and supported by North Coast Regional District, Archipelago Search and Rescue, and Canadian Coast Guard.

Gid G̱waa GyaaG̱a GawG̱a is the ancestral X̲aayda Kil name for this inlet (Advice from The Council of the Haida Nation, 2020).

Francis Poole was a mining engineer who in 1863-64 prospected copper bearing ore bodies in the vicinity of Poole and Skincuttle Inlets. The name Poole inlet was suggested by H.D. Parizeau of the Dominion Hydrographic Survey.
