Clinton Creek adopted in the 18th Report of the Geographic Board of Canada, 31 March 1924, as labelled on BC map 1G, 1916, not "Junction Creek" as labelled on earlier maps.

Traditional name is for the upper reaches is Spil-pal'-um, meaning flat prairie (George Dawson, "Shuswap Names within Kamloops map area", Geological Survey of Canada Report Vol.VII, 1894.) Note that Dawson's map, Geological Survey sheet 557, Kamloops, labels Clinton Creek as terminating at Clinton (ie. not flowing directly into Bonaparte River)
