Adopted 8 July 1948 on Hydrographic Services Chart #3734. Labelled "Islet Point" on British Admiralty Chart 1462, 1872, but "Kean Point" was adopted so the feature would have a unique name.

Kean was the name of the accountant at nearby Klemtu cannery, which operated 1927-1930 and 1934-1969.The plant was owned by J H Todd& sons and was extensively upgraded and modernized by manager Lewis Hogan in 1941. This name was adopted in 1948.
