"Named on account of the number of cottonwood trees - also known as wild aspen - in the vicinity." (letter from W.A. Dodds, postmaster, 1905) [note: the name of the tree, Aspen, is derived from the french "asperare", to breath, a reference to the leaves that quiver with the slighest breath of air.]
