Holberg Inlet adopted 6 April 1926 on Ottawa file OBF 0988, as recommended by Hydrographic Service; not "West Arm (Quatsino Sound)" as identified on earlier charts. Re-approved 6 May 1947 on 102I/9, 3 June 1947 on 92L/12 and 6 November 1952 on 102I.

Named by H.D. Parizeau, Hydrographic Service, "...after the Norwegian [sic] settlement at head of the inlet." [this was a Danish settlement, in turn named after a Danish writer]. See Holberg (community) for additional origin information.
