Named after the Governor General of Canada, His Excellency General the Right Honourable Lord Byng of Vimy, GCB, GCMG, MVO (1862 - 1935). Born Julian Hedworth George Byng in London; commanded Canadian Corps at the Battle of Vimy Ridge; commanded 3rd Army 1917-18; governor general of Canada 1921-26; commissioner of police, metropolitan London 1928-34.
