Adopted 12 December 1939 on 92G/13 as proposed by Hydrographic Servies and as listed in 1930 Gazetteer and as labeled on Reference Map 2D "Powell Lake" (1923) and Reference Map 1K "B.C. South Western Districts" (1925). May have previously been labeled as Tzoone River (Provincial Mine Repot 1920), Tzoonye River (Reference Map 5A, date not cited), Tsoome River (Reference Map 20, 1912).

"Tzoonie" is recorded as being an an anglicization of a Sechelt word. "Tsō-nie" (meaning unknown) was recorded as being a dialect variation of "Tsō-die," which was a village at Deserted Bay in Jervis Inlet. "Ska-kay-um" is recorded as being the Sechelt name for this river, which is recorded as translating to "loon."
