Named in 1865 by Captain Pender after Andrew Colville Mackenzie, third son of Kenneth Mackenzie of Craigflower Farm, Victoria. Andrew Colvile, HBC governor at the time, is generally understood to have been the child's namesake, but the boy's record of birth, 6 April 1854, is clearly spelled "Andrew Colville Mackenzie" (advice from Vital Statistics branch 27 November 1972).
